A Recent Survey Shows Users Believe Big Tech Is Too Powerful ..Most of us can’t imagine living a full day of our lives without doing a Google Search, checking our Instagram feed, logging into our favorite online games like,

or seeing what our friends are up to on Facebook. Where would we be with our social media updates and frequent Amazon deliveries?

A staggering number of users have stated that they rely on social media far too much and wish they could unhook from the platforms

and be more present in their day to day lives. Moreover, many are concerned about the negative impact social media has had on their spending habits, relationships, and overall well-being.

Furthermore, the concerns go beyond the mental and intangible aspects of tech use,
to actual concerns about privacy and data.

These days if we so much as talk about shopping for a specific item, it will surely show up as an ad on our social media pages.

Proving that tech companies have access to us in ways many people are not aware of.In a recent Consumer Report survey,

about 4 out of 5 people believe Big Tech has far too much influence over us.

The Growth of Major Players

In the last decade alone, Facebook, Google, and Amazon have grown exponentially. Using mergers to widen their reach to every type of consumer.

Such as what Facebook did when it bought its competitors, Instagram, and Whatsapp. Or as Google did when it acquired YouTube, Fitbit, and Nest Labs, just to name a few out of the 200+ entities owned by Google.
Many consumers believe these mergers to be worrisome, as they diminish competition and our options. As such,

we are seeing a rise in usage of platforms like Telegram and Parler which are independent of big tech. At least for the time being.

Other Issues

Users express concern at issues like unfair pricing, censoring, and the spread of misinformation. Not to mention, political biases displayed blatantly on Facebook and Twitter.

Other things that leave a bad impression on users is the fact that Amazon and Google secure data about consumer spending on their platforms.

Thereby allowing companies to offer pricing based on area codes and income. The more income you have,

the more you will pay for the same items that are cheaper in lower-income areas.
Misinformation and censorship are another major concern for users,
many of whom rely on certain platforms for daily news.

Not trusting some major media outlets for unbiased updates. The control that big tech has over the information we receive is unsettling, to say the least, and can be very harmful depending on the situation.

Three in four individuals surveyed believe that tech companies should make more effort to ensure information found on their platforms is consistent with the truth.

It’s safe to say that we would be in a better world if most of us weren’t so reliant on our phones and computers.

However, since we are already in that dilemma the only way to solve it is by practicing free-thinking and being more aware of the impact these platforms have on our lives.
