Outdoor chain Gander Mountain has filed for bankruptcy and will close 32 stores, including several locations in Alabama.
“Like many retailers, Gander Mountain experienced challenging traffic patterns and shifts in consumer demand resulting from increased direct-to-customer sales by key vendors and accelerated growth of e-commerce,” Gander Mountain said in a written statement.
The retailer will close 32 underperforming stores – including four in Alabama – as part of its restructuring.
Gander Mountain operates some 116 stores in 23 states, including Alabama locations in Florence, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden, Montgomery, Mobile and Opelika.
Gander Mountain previously sought bankruptcy protections in the 1990s.

SHEBOYGAN — Gander Mountain filed for bankruptcy on Friday and will be closing 32 underperforming stores over the next few weeks.
Gander Mountain was founded in 1960 in Wilmot, an unincorporated community in Kenosha County, as a catalog retailer.
Gander Mountain plans to solicit bids prior to an auction planned for late April.
Reuters reported nearly a month ago that Gander Mountain was close to filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
At this time, the Sheboygan store, located at County Road J at Gander Road in the Town of Sheboygan, is unaffected by the bankruptcy filing.
Gander Mountain files bankruptcy, Eau Claire store to close
Eau Claire (WQOW)- Gander Mountain has declared bankruptcy and the Minnesota based company will now close 32 of its locations, including one in Eau Claire.
According to Gander Mountain, each store generally employs 20-30 full time people and another 20-30 on a part-time and seasonal basis.
In it, Gander Mountain calls the bankruptcy filing an “important step in our restructuring”.
Gander Mountain currently operates 162 locations across the country.
A company spokesperson could not provide an exact closing date for the Eau Claire location, but said the store is one of 32 that will be winding down in the coming weeks.
