MUMBAI: Taking a potshot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his picture weaving khadi on a simple charkha in Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC) calendar, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi on Saturday said it would not be shocking if the Prime Minister might replace Mahatma Gandhi’s photo by his own on currency notes.“It would not be shocking, if tomorrow, Narendra Modi replaces Mahatma Gandhi’s photo on currency notes by his own,” Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi told ANI.Calling the entire incident appalling, Azmi said charkha and khadi are associated with Mahatma Gandhi and that there is no comparison between the two.

Reacting sharply to the Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC) calendar row, the Aam Aadmi Party today said it “won’t be surprising” if Mahatma Gandhi’s image is replaced by that of Narendra Modi “on currency notes”.AAP leader Dilip Pandey targeted Prime Minister Modi over the issue saying the move only bolsters his “megalomaniac image”.“It won’t be surprising if Gandhi’s image is replaced with that of Modi’s on currency notes.

Gandhi’s name is such that from the day his photo started appearing on currency notes, the note has devalued, says the minister.Days after replacement of Mahatma Gandhi’s photographs with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s in Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC)’s annual calendar and diary kicked off a political storm, Haryana Minister Anil Vij on January 14 sparked a new controversy by saying that Gandhi will gradually be removed from currency notes too.“Good that Mahatma Gandhi was replaced by PM Modi on Khadi calendar, Gandhi will also gradually be removed from currency notes,” the minister said.
