BMW has decided to strategically realign its automobile racing activities.This realignment, which comes seven years after the withdrawal from Formula One and four years after returning to the DTM, allows BMW to stay relevant in the ever-changing world of motorsport, while catering to different target groups around the world.According to the company, the strong pillars of the program for the coming years will be the DTM, the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC), the cooperation with Andretti Formula E in the FIA Formula E Championship, the customer racing program in the GT3 and GT4 categories, the promotion of talented young drivers, and the extremely challenging Dakar Rally.

BMW has announced that it will be joining the FIA World Endurance Championship with a factory GTE programme from 2018 onwards.The Bavarian marque will join Porsche, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Ford and potentially Chevrolet in the global series, and will contest the Le Mans 24 Hours for the first time since 2011, when it competed with the M3 GT2.BMW is believed to have evaluated an LMP1 and Garage 56 project over the last 12 months before deciding on a GTE assault as part of its expanded global motorsport programme.

As first revealed by Sportscar365 in July, BMW will enter the FIA World Endurance Championship with an all-new GTE car, beginning in 2018.The German manufacturer formally announced its plans on Tuesday, as part of a realignment of its motorsports activities that includes a continued focus on DTM, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, GT3 and GT4 customer racing, as well as ventures in Formula E and Dakar.The yet-to-be-announced GTE car will compete in both the WEC and WeatherTech Championship.
